RESPONSE -“IS SCHOOL SCAM?”

“Thoughts should be expressed freely-everyone entitled to their opinion”

My intention wasn’t to come up here to quote other people’s views. But hey! The responses I’ve gotten since I made my last post have been massive. I listened to you guys and I’m here with a follow-up on the topic “IS SCHOOL SCAM?”.

The aforementioned theme has garnered so many perspectives and I feel overwhelmed; I must say I’m at crossroads myself!!!

The following are excerpts from a group chat I had with people of different academic backgrounds (classroom scholars, home-schooled folks, self-taught geniuses and online-lecture takers). They school home and abroad, but share the same nationality- Nigeria.

“School is the biggest time-wasting stereotype ever created” one said! But, don’t you think years without the basic education we had would have been a waste?

“School messed me up; school ruined my creativity. Our minds shouldn’t be made to fit into the four corners of a building. School doesn’t give room for diversity; It encourages students to be conformists. I will excel in school yeah, but it is a scam still!”—-JOSIE

“I don’t know if it’s the Nigerian educational system, but education here is messed up! The curriculum has ‘expired’; We are still learning what our parents learnt several years ago. Things are evolving- there’s the artificial intelligence and other innovations that can enhance learning. Our methods here are becoming obsolete- School has, is and will always be scam to me. How do we change the world if we are all expected to be alike?”—-EDDIE

“Too bad we all have lost it (the essence of school/schooling). Our educational system here is flawed but the origination of schooling is to enhance our intellectual-physically and mentally”—-AMARA

“The school is not the problem. You can go to school and not get educated; you can be educated and not go to school. This doesn’t mean there’s no purpose for not going to school- We need to go to the four walls of a confinement to learn some things. You can’t say school is scam because you are in a system that doesn’t work for you. Airheads who are produced from schools shouldn’t be counted as the school’s fault; most people lack PURPOSE. School is a tunnel, not a door to an endpoint”—-WOLE

“It’s all dependent on your career choice. There’s a reason music is taught as a degree but not everyone makes great ‘hits’ after four years in college. A freestyle might be your big hit. Thus, know what you want to do and figure out the best way to go about it”—-MOYIN

“School is not the problem, neither is it a catalyst for guaranteed success. We don’t need school to survive. We don’t need the stereotype to survive. All we need are our minds in the right frame; follow passion not systems”—-AYO

“In today’s schooling system, results of good students are sold to the ‘not so good’ ones who are ready to pay any amount. Most times, it’s about the result not the performance”—ADUNOLA

“School is not a scam. You go to school to educate the mind, to acquire knowledge. What you do with the knowledge acquired is totally dependent on you. In most instances, employers look for skills rather than degrees, but still expect to see a degree”—-ADA

“We should debunk the idea of school being a scam. The idea is so grave because of how we were brought up. If we were taught with different means and educated in ways we enjoyed, I can bet some opinions would change”—-OZIOMA

“School has an important role to play, but too much importance is attached to it. If one ends up in a career outside what he studied in school, he will still make smarter choices -in some situations- than one who is not educated. School gives a foundation to discover interests and talents”—-DIVINE

At this juncture, I can only say school is paramount, yes! But don’t limit yourself to the confinement of a building to get educated!!!

It was a long read! I really appreciate every single person who contributed to the success of this write-up. I couldn’t post everything up here. There’s more to share with you all!

IS SCHOOL SCAM???

Hey fam! Thanks for reading my first post. The love and support I’ve received since then have been massive.

So here we go. Yes, we’re talking about EDUCATION!!!
I heard school is the “guy” between life and LIFE. However, some say “SCHOOL IS SCAM”. I have received firsthand experience on this but my friends-home and abroad-have shared real experiences on their pursuit of education. I’m at a point where I’m considering the essence of spending so many years in college. So, my question, How Much Of A Scam Is School?
Growing up was intense, we had great experiences. We set goals (short and long term). We wanted to have great careers. Our parents were catalysts to being this “perfect” being. Some wore strange personas. Time passed by, we grew up to understand there was a difference between Career and Passion. I hear people say these two won’t clash if you know what you want in life. But how do I know when I’m supposed to be taught some real-life lessons in SCHOOL.
A mentor once said, “don’t let schooling affect your education”. That’s deep! You spend years in school but end up feeling useless when you’re out. You miss out on great opportunities because you had projects to do. Your Lecturer is the “bad guy”; he’ll rather fail you than give you a pass mark. How about skill acquisition??? Just a few can boast of possessing real skills. You can’t help yourself when you run out of cash; you go to your old buddies and you feel embarrassed asking them for stipends. You keep late nights only to end up failing the test. You feel like you’re a failure…..THEN DEPRESSION KICKS IN! It’s funny how things have evolved – There’s always been the post-graduation depression, but I learnt about the pre-graduation depression. You’re in your final year and you can’t help but think of how you’ll put your life together. You realize you’re not ready to face the world. Finally, the post-graduation trauma; you feel like you’re competing with LIFE. Then It becomes SURVIVING not EXPLORING…it becomes EXISTING not LIVING.
Here’s a plot twist: Imagine not going to school. Paint a picture of yourself without the classes and experiences you had. The relationships and foundations you built. Life without those years in School will be a “waste”. So, we can say we go to school to pass away time! School is important. Imagine dealing with basic life situations without applying an idea you got from school? Education in Finland should be an example to the world.
However, some folks were home-schooled and they turned out great! Online classes have changed so many things.
So why do you have to be within the four walls of a controlled environment to succeed?
School is here to stay. So, GET OUT THERE AND CHALLENGE YOURSELF!!!

Thanks for reading. This is a wide topic and everything can’t be expressed up here. There might be a follow-up on this depending on the reviews I get.
IS SCHOOL SCAM? HOW MUCH OF A SCAM IS IT? HAS SCHOOLING HELPED YOU IN DEALING WITH REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS?

WHY I DO WHAT I DO

Here’s to trying and failing for the umpteenth time. I’m not a writer, I only express myself on paper. I should hold an anniversary for finally putting this up here!!!

The question “WHY I DO WHAT I DO” can’t be answered in a blog post but hey, I’m a weird human with unexpressed emotions. Hence, the reason I write. A year ago, a friend @screamingfirefly wrote “my mind has the semblance of an array of quarantined wolves fighting to escape a tight space, letting them out orally could lead to a pandemic of mysteries. So I write to let the wolves run free in ink, to heal the wounds inflicted by struggling wolves- to free my head. To pass a message of help from the wolves to those who would understand- so they can help me understand”.

What if I refrain from writing? “the wolves get bigger, feeding on the expanse of my imaginations, nurtured by the intensity of my fantasy. They take over, trampling on the line demarcating fantasy and reality; they tap into my subconscious, I become lost. I stare at blank spaces. I enjoy solitude”. Then the voices, little voices, they make it major and run wild in my head. Thus, this is why I write: To retain my sanity; To cage my mind; To kill the struggle; To let the wolves run free.

This was never meant to be a first blog post. But hey! If you can relate to any of the aforementioned strange lines, you’re one of a kind!!!

Thanks for reading my first blog post.

My writing decision was inspired by so many people. @screamingfirefly helped with this.
